DX Stories

Date: summer 1988
Frequency/mode: 27.385 LSB
Contact: Hawaii, U.S.A
Callsign: unknown
Approximate distance: 6132 kilometers
RadioCanada member: Ross RC4455

The summer of 1988 marked approximately 24 months after the beginning of Solar Cycle 22. The average monthly sunspot number was 125-130 and climbing (to a peak of nearly 160 compared to a brief maximum peak of 120 for Solar Cycle 23). I was driving in my car at lunch time with my Realistic TRC-453 SSB radio, Realistic power mic and Radio Shack 102" whip tuning up and down the band. 27.385 LSB was very active. It was hard to tell the local from the DX. I pulled into a local burger joint's drive-thru window. As I waited a strong clear voice which sounded like it was coming from my back seat asked for a CQ. I replied. He answered with his callsign (which has since faded from my memory) and asked about the surf in my location! When I told him that the nearest ocean was a thousand of kilometers away and it was Hudson's Bay he was very surprised. It wasn't just the great distance that was surprising it was the fact we were both mobile stations and the signal was so strong and clear. We exchanged the usual information about weather etc until other stations started piling up trying to start a QSO with this Hawaiian station. After a while conditions faded out as quickly as they came...

Date: April 1987 Frequency/mode: 27.385 LSB
Contact: Johannesburg, South Africa
Callsign: 98
Approximate distance from Winnipeg: 14715 kilometers
RadioCanada member: Wayne RC197

Wayne was talking locally with another Radio Canada Member, Lil, when a QSK came in. At first Wayne didn't hear it but Lil did and told Wayne to reply. Wayne made contact long enough to get his callsign and location but the signal faded out before he could copy the South African's first name.
